Ernie Neal's four-speed GT/A Cavalier went sky-high on his only shot, crushing the oil pan upon re-entry. Unable to report to the scales with the damage, Ernie was denied the class trophy despite being the only car in the class!

While NHRA’s professional classes get most of the mainstream press’s attention as well as coverage the staff here at DRO is just as entertained and appreciative of the Stock and Super Stock classes. In fact an informal pole of the writers and photographers that work for this rag shows that most of them-given the choice-would much rather watch Super Stock class eliminations than Pro Stock. So with that in mind we had Bret Kepner shoot the qualifying rounds of Super Stock at Gainesville so that we could give a little ink and credit to those that race in the high-winding wheels-up Super Stock classes. We also decided that since class eliminations don’t get much attention these days we’d devote the majority of our coverage to the class winners. (Because of weather delays at Gainesville the class run-offs were canceled and class winners were determined by best ET in qualifying) We’d have liked to have been able to show every car in Super Stock Eliminator at Gainesville but there were a 103 of them so we picked out the ones we thought did the best wheelies or were named class Champions. Hope you enjoy. Oh and by the way we will do this same type of coverage for the Stock Eliminator competitors in a future issue of the magazine.

Georgian Jonathan Horton got plenty of air with his SS/DA ’69 Camaro on his way to a -0.608 9.892 lap, but found himself third quickest in the class.

Perennial World Champ Dan Fletcher and his SS/EA got the class win at Gainesville, running a -0.84 9.804 with his feared small-block Camaro.
