Gateway International Raceway hosted the third event of the 2006 seven race ADRL series for Outlaw Pro Mods. Thirty-two Pro Extreme cars made qualifying attempts and 22 Pro Nitrous cars answered the call. There were about 10-12 more Pro Nitrous cars that were in lanes for the last qualifying session for both classes Saturday afternoon, April 15, when the rains came and forced a delay that eventually caused the ADRL management team to cancel the last session.
Many racers were upset when the sky cleared and ADRL’s management team allowed a scheduled concert to go on rather than extend qualifying, but ADRL president Kenny Nowling explained the decision. “We sold a lot of advance tickets for the concert and since the racers already had made two qualifying sessions I made the decision to have the concert for the fans that had bought tickets specifically for that concert. I felt it was the fairest thing I could do for both the racers and those fans of the band that was scheduled."
In the end the race was not completed as it continued to rain off and on the rest of the night. The final rounds of Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous will be part of the ADRL race at Memphis Motorsports Park May 19-20.
Despite many delays for weather, oil-downs, and a balky timing system, the ADRL fans were treated to a spectacular qualifying show and an almost complete race.
We have decided to list the qualifying for both classes and use pictures and captions to illustrate the story of the race.
