In the Nitro Funny Car class, someone finally wrestled a Rockingham win away from journeyman Jack Wyatt of Corydon, Iowa. Wyatt had won three straight Funny Car events at the Carolina track before Bob Gilbertson prevailed on Sunday, ending a frustrating season on a positive note.

Led by crew chief Tommy Delago, Gilbertson won the Funny Car title in dominating fashion, literally overpowering the field to give him his third career IHRA win.

The IHRA World Finals Oct. 19-21 at Rockingham, NC, was a race where many drivers recorded “firsts.” Veteran IHRA Top Fuel team owner and driver Bruce Litton got off the championship “schneid” Sunday by clinching his first IHRA series championship in impressive fashion. Litton held off the Dave Settles-tuned T.J. Zizzo Top Fuel car that was leading the points going into the event, and spanked six-time IHRA Pro Modified World Champ turned Top Fuel driver Scotty Cannon in the final round.
