Another bad break came for Ford racer Bruce Dyckes who was making his debut in Hughes P/S action as his twin turbo big block Ford Mustang hit both walls in each lane and then came to a stop backwards against the other lane’s wall in the shut-down area.

In Hughes Pro Street number one qualifier Ed Thornton in his Extreme Speed, Precision  twin turbo 1957 Chevrolet kept pace with John Scialpi’s Red Line Oil 1957 Chevy powered by a blown Chevrolet engine he built himself. Thorntons tuner for the weekend Doug Stewart with assistance from Shane Tecklenburg who was on vacation (but still able to turn the screws with remote tuning) turned the wick up on Thornton’s Black Beast to a 6.42 ET at 228 mph in the final. Scialpi’s tire shake was so bad he shut it off before shaking the fillings out of his teeth.
