The Shootout format delivered the kind of event needed to support local racetracks that today only run Super Eliminator and bracket oriented shows, which seldom grab much spectator support.  If there was any indication that the drag racing world was watching this event NHRA’s Graham Light bought a ticket as did John Force Racing Crew Chief Bernie Fedderly and Famoso Raceway’s Blake and John Bowser.

Veteran Canadian nitro pilot Terry Capp (right) drove Ron Hodgeson’s Bubble-up Pacemaker Firebird to low elapsed time in testing for the event running 6.092 at 235.27 MPH.  (Leong-Fedderly.jpg) Fellow Canadian Bernie Fedderly helped Gordon Jenner and Hawaiian Roland Leong for an all-star cast of Crew Chiefs to card low ET.

Steve Romanazzi, Blake and John Bowser discuss final round strategies. Rick Rogers took on double duty shoeing his own top fuel dragster to the number four position and driving the Pisano and Matsubara flopper in testing to 6.24.
The legendary “Winged Express” driven by Mike Boyd made half-track smokey burnouts and a strong quarter mile pass for the fans. Bob Godfrey got back in the seat of the “Oblivion Express”.  The flopper has been driven for most of the season by Ron Capps.
Jim Holtz drove Marc Roy’s “Predator” to the number five qualifying position with a 6.416 at 229.43 tuned by veteran Dale Buehl. Part of the Manufacturer’s Midway showed off Steve Magnante’s cool “Wilshire Shaker” altered wheelbase Nova.
A fine collection of Cackle Cars were fired off at random times with a very select group of rookie pilots in the seats of the vintage machines thanks to John Ewald’s efforts. The beautiful restoration of Phil Castronovo’s Custom Body Enterprises vintage Funny Car was on display.  The car was formerly driven by Venolia Piston’s Tom Prock.
