Slideshow

Scott Ray’s supercharged Corvette shook violently, got up on two wheels, slid down track sideways and then twirled around. A superior driving job by Ray kept the car from turning over and it eventually ended up in opponent John Russo’s lane without ever touching a track marker along the way. He didn’t make the show, but you could say at this race he was the show.

Raymond Commisso collected his second $1,000 Ohio Crankshaft Low Qualifier Award of the 2008 season Saturday afternoon when his 5.989 at 239.36 mph from Friday kept his ProCare Rx Firebird on top of the JEGS ProMod Challenge ladder.

This marks the fourth time Commisso has topped the qualifying sheets in NHRA action, placing him in a tie for third on the all-time list. Only reigning champion Josh Hernandez (11) and former Jim Oddy team driver Fred Hahn (8) have more No. 1 qualifying efforts to their credit.

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. Steve Engel blows the door off his own car! The ’63 Corvette did not qualify for the show.
