Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, AZ, hosted its annual Fuel Altered meet June 28-29 with a group of nitro burning AA/FC’s and alky burning BB/FC’s from surrounding states gathering for the meet.
An estimated 3,000 fans showed up on a beautiful night and were treated to nine nitro burning fuel altereds making qualifying laps.
Las Vegas-based driver Vince Generalao set the pace for the field with a stout 6.337/225.45 lap driving the “Nanook” 23 T-Bucket powered by a “little” (460ci) Hemi. He was followed on the qualifying ladder by Arizona racer Mike Hilsabeck in another 23-T Bucket who recorded a 6.476/204.32.
The top four was completed by Craig Michaels, who shoed the family’s ’32 Bantam Coupe to a 6.556/204, and one of the last touring Fuel Altered drivers, Ron Hope in the legendary “Rat Trap” roadster carded a 6.930/206.16.
Ron Maroney, Mike Boyd, and Mack McCord also made two laps each.
