I later caught up with Graeme Cowin and he assured me that what looked like three easy passes certainly wasn’t. “Its never easy” he informed me. “We run a smaller bore (4.187 instead of a std 4.250) so that we can use the same sleeves out of the Top Fuel dragster. This combination is the same as what Plueger runs in the States with a pair of Alan Johnson heads and manifold, a Kuhl 6-71 blower, Enderle Bugcatcher and Cerillo mag.”

“There is no doubt that this is one of the best weekends we’ve ever had”, Cowin admitted.”What with the open day on Saturday, the race win and it being Andrew’s birthday, we couldn’t ask for better”, he went on to say. It was a good way to end the year with Andrew also winning the Top Fuel bracket at the ANDRA Pro Series three weeks earlier and Graeme’s personal street car (a 700 horsepower fuel injected 528 Hemi powered ’70 Plymouth Barracuda) winning the Street Machine Magazine Car of the Year award.

Longfield was gracious in defeat. “This was the first time that we ran the Nostalgia Fuel bracket and getting the funny car and the dragsters all on the same level was never going to be easy but who is to say that in the final that Andrew might have broken a blower belt and we got through”.

“There is a huge amount of interest in Nostalgia Fuel and if you consider that a Top Alcohol/Doorslammer blower and injection is about the same cost as my entire motor, it is a very economical way to go fuel racing. We didn’t break anything on the day – we didn’t have to really do anything to the engine what so ever”, he conceded.

Backing up the fuel bracket was a “State of Origin” Wild Bunch show. In Australia the various football codes have this type of tournaments. The best way to explain it is like the American north versus south rivalry – with the Queensland Cane Toads (north) taking on the New South Wales Cockroaches (south). Points were awarded for wins and losses and the points recorded throughout the day were reasonably close.

With a large number of pairings over three rounds during the day it came down to the final runs. In the end Queensland just eeked out a win – 71 to 69 points.
