Stanfield’s easiest round win was the first one. Shane Gray fouled out and Stanfield posted a time of 6.654 seconds at 208.98 mph. In a crucial second-round match against Jeg Coughlin, Stanfield was in front all the way, 6.652 at 207.72 to 6.671 at 208.55, and he did the same against Warren Johnson in the semifinals with a .026-second reaction and a time of 6.659 at 207.56 to 6.656 at 208.65).
Stanfield, the team’s engine builder, left soon after the final round to return to his Metairie, La., shop to resume work on the motors.
