Extreme Import Runner-Up Carlos Montana

Promoter Dave Hance formed the Extreme Import class at the event Friday, and those sixteen cars -- part of a Shakedown-record 249 total entrants -- put on a thrilling, accident-free show. Top starter Jorge Lazcano, of Puerto Rico, and his 350Z overtook Carlos "Pepe Loco" Montana, of Paterson, New Jersey, and his '96 Mazda in a strong side-by-side final race and won, 6.835 to 6.959.

Hance, who had experienced terrible luck at his own race in past years, met a personal goal while racing in the Blown Pro Mod class. He registered his first five-second pass. He did it in the opening round of eliminations with a 5.927-second E.T. at a career-best 251.77 mph in defeating Pete Farber.

"We also were one of only two cars to run in the 250-mile-an-hour range," Hance said. "I'm grateful for all the valuable advice I've gotten from Don Bailey, Steve Petty, and Todd Tutterow. And I would to thank my wonderful family, crew, and all the consultants who helped get us to this milestone."
