The final round looked like it was going to be interesting, as Romine’s crew were thrashing away to install a rack of piston and a new clutch pack, removing the heads for inspection, and checking the mains. Hale’s team did minimal between rounds maintenance, not removing the heads and just cooling the clutch. The Romine and Hale teams have been racing each other in final rounds all season, and the score going into this final was Romine, two wins – Hale, one. At the flash of the lights, the drivers left. Neither cut a great light, but they left virtually together, 146 to .150. Once again Romine’s Mustang ran a 5.90. All Hale had to do was run quicker. He did not, instead carding a 6.11, giving Romine another tick in the win column.
