The highlight of the first qualifying session was L. Brown driving the Twins Performance Pontiac to a fine 4.14 at 175.10 mph to move to the top of the qualifying ladder.

Not far behind Brown was Jeff Benham carding a 4.28/163.46 in his purple 1959 Corvette.

The second session saw six of the eight entries try to improve their position. Again Smith launched hard and then had the Vette rattle the tires to a disappointing 7.01 at 67.40. Team Smith admitted to experimenting with the tuneup to test the new drive set up, and it bit them. Again Brown showed power and consistency laying down a number-one qualifying 4.12/176.06.

Benham slowed to a 4.54/130.97 while Richard Willet equaled his first session 4.72 at a slower 143.31 mph. Brown was the only driver to improve in the second session.
