Getting used to a new seat was young Eily Stafford, who was sorting out the “Strange Brew” Modified Coupe from Gruzen Racing.  On new Goodyear tires, Stafford ran a best of 7.32 against the NE1 index of 7.60 powered by the newly freshened Joel Gruzen-built Chevy small block. She moved over from the “Desperado” NE1 dragster over the winter.

Dan Horan Jr. carded low elapsed time in his ’66 Mustang nitro funny car.  Horan, one of the pioneers of the nitro funny car class and veteran nitro crew chief, Ron Swearingen, have figured out something -- although they didn’t want to share it -- running a 5.88 ET with the engine nosing over at around 1,000 feet.

Former Jr. Fuel standout John Rasmussen was licensing in Bob Richardson's "Circuit Breaker" Top Fuel Dragster, replacing Bill Dunlap.
