In the finals, the San Diego-based White has the superior car on paper, and had been very solid on the tree all race long. Young on the other hand was in his first March Meet finals. However as many people have said, “we don’t race these things on paper!”

At the green the young man from Wisconsin was the first out by nearly five-hundredths over his opponent. As the cars headed down track White’s car appeared to be on another one of his mid-sixties runs. The only thing is that Young, driving Frank and Debra Ousley’s bright yellow dragster, was on a pass that would yield an ET nearly two tenths better than they had recorded during the event. The Ousley-tuned Crop Duster machine recorded a 5.68/248.98 win, just quick enough to better White, who ran a 5.69 at 258.67 in a losing effort.
