Stock Eliminator featured a father vs. son battle with Brad Burton, 23, facing off with dad, Scott, 55. Brad, Kirkland, Wash., came out on top with an 11.153 second lap at 115.14 mph in his ’72 Firebird. Scott runs a ’70 Firebird out of Golden, Colo.  (Tim Marshall photo)

Seldom do families come together in the final round of an NHRA national event, but Stock Eliminator racers Brad and Scott Burton bucked the trend and became just the fifth father and son to race against each other in a final round of an NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series national event.

Both Burtons race on Goodyear tires, differing versions of Goodyear’s 30-inch by nine-inch radial tire for Stock Eliminator tires.

“It’s something we’ve been trying to do for a long time,” Brad said. “It was a perfect weekend when you can run (against) your dad in the final. As soon as I crossed the finish line, it was kind of a half fist pump, half sigh.”

Jimmy DeFrank scored lucky number 13 taking the win over Glenn Snow in Super Stock. DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., ran down Snow, Saint George, Utah, with a 9.043 second, 149.58 mph run to Snow’s 10.456, 120.88.  (James Drew photo) Jesse Serna, El Paso, Texas, was two-thousandths quicker than Val Torres for the win in this ’93 Grand Am Super Gas entry. The pair were identical off the line with Serna posting a 10.052 to Torres’ 10.054 in his ’63 Corvette. It was Serna’s first victory in a national event. (James Drew photo)
