Cedar Falls Raceway raced to the NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series Team Championship for the second year in a row this weekend at Heartland Park Topeka. The team from Cedar Falls, Iowa, racked up 66 points to beat sister track Cordova Dragway Park who finished second with 55 points followed by Brainerd International Raceway in third and host track Heartland Park in fourth.

Four Iowa racers claimed individual honors led by Super Pro Champion Travis Smiley and his ’91 S10.  The Emerson, Iowa, racer got the early lead and ran 119 mph in 9.475 seconds to defeat Glen Gordon, Wolcott, N.D., who was quicker at 8.906, 159 mph.

Steve Marquis, Camanche, Iowa, wheeled his ’62 Chevy II to the win as did Tom Klemme and Brian Hurley.  Marquis faced off with Travis Baumert in the Pro final round.  The two drivers had identical reaction times with Marquis better at the top end running 9.238 seconds on the 9.23 dial in for the win.  Baumert, Sigourney, Iowa, went 10.099 at 131 in his ’72 Camaro.  Davenport, Iowa, resident Klemme took the trophy in Pro Bike knocking out Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn., with a pass of 8.830 seconds at 134 mph.  Clampitt crossed the finish line at 144 mph in 8.993 seconds.  Hurley rounded out the Iowa winners as he beat Michelle Emmans in the High School class.  Hurley, Waterloo, Iowa, piloted his ’98 Nova to a lap of 12.280 at 108 mph to Emmans’ loosing effort of 15.062 at 84 mph.

The Sportsman trophy went to John Dost II, Olathe, Kan., and his ’92 Camaro.  Dost defeated Shane Newland, Independence, Mo., in 12.127 seconds at 116 mph to Newland’s 12.789 at 106 in his ’66 Fairlane.

Smiley, Marquis, Klemme and Dost will all advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona where they will face off with the champions from the six other NHRA divisions for more than $100,000 in purse.
