A family who truly lives the sport of drag racing

The one thing about drag racing is that it is something a family can do together. Every family member from the age of 8 on up can compete.

We have all seen at the “big show” the Force family racing, the Johnson’s Kurt and Warren, the Arana father and sons -- the list goes on and on, working and racing together as a family.

It is easy to say that a person is hard pressed to find a family as involved in and who love drag racing as much as the Hawker family from southeastern Idaho.

The whole thing started with Robert and Joyce Hawker, who had three boys, Tracy, James and Troy, and a daughter, Rachel. Racing and street rodding were just part of the family life.

In 2012 Robert lost his battle with cancer and the three boys took the helm of the racing enterprise.

It is not just the three boys who race; some of the boys’ wives race also. Daughters, sons, close cousins, distant cousins, and close family friends make up the Hawker Racing clan.

Troy Hawker

Now calling this group a clan is understating the fact of how many cars this family shows up with to an event.

At this year’s Halloween Classic the Hawkers did show up with not a couple of cars, not a half dozen cars, not a dozen cars -- the Hawkers showed up with sixteen race cars. This could almost constitute a brigade! And that’s not even the total number of cars they own.

There were twelve full-body cars running in every class from Super Pro to Sportsman, and four Junior Dragsters.

Tracy Hawker

According to Tracy Hawker,  “We have two, three car haulers down in Arizona right now. If we had them at home, we could have brought all twenty-two cars with us.”

There are car dealerships that don’t have twenty-two cars on the lot. “ We have a great time when we get together and race with our friends and family, and that’s the main reason we do this,” explained Tracy on Saturday morning after doing a photo shoot at the top end of the Firebird race track.

The sight left some people asking what all those cars were doing down in the shut down area.

Fear not, it was just the Hawkers doing a quick family photo.  – Brian Losness
