In what might be a scene we’ll see often during the 2013 NHRA season, two of the premier teams in Top Fuel, an Al-Anabi entry and a Don Schumacher Racing entry met in the finals of the Winternationals on Feb. 17. In Funny Car it was a JFR driver against a DSR driver and a driver just starting his career took down one of the legends of the Pro Stock class.

When Top Fuel qualifying was finished on Saturday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, the U.S. Army-backed dragster driven by Tony Schumacher nailed the #1 qualifying spot with his Mike Green-tuned 3.753 elapsed time at 328.14 mph, but as had happened to Gary Densham’s nitro funny car on Thursday, Schumacher’s parachute issues led him into the Pomona top end sand trap, without hurting the racecar.
