The track had “teeth” right up to and including the City of Kennedale mandated midnight curfew, sending the final round off at 11:45 p.m. Saturday night.  When Hale sailed through the traps he rang up an amazing 3.746/200.50 lap that not only got him the win but also set Top Speed and Low ET of the meet.

Young followed with a 3.940/191.10. It had been said by some before the race that Texas Raceway was too short for nitro cars to run them “out the back door.” Not true.

There were some other racers who delivered great passes during this two-night race.

Tommy Johnson Jr., who started racing on eighth-mile tracks in Iowa when he was five years old, made his AA/FC debut driving Illinois team owner Frank Ousley’s “Crop Duster” ‘70 Barracuda. Johnson ran a best of 3.860/191.29.
