The sweet looking two litre VW Golf GTI of Sam Wood smokes the bags in his burnout while competing in the Street Compact class. He qualified sixth in his street driven Volksy with an 11.434. He faced the second qualifying Mazda Rotary 12A motored ’86 Mazda RX3 of Marko Grgich. Unfortunately for Wood he left too soon and a red lighting shut off early 12.716 put him out of competition.

As can be seen here the blue 13B Mazda Rotary powered ’73 Mazda RX3 of Raymond Chakti has his right front guard blowing in the wind just after he passed the finish-line on this 8.880 qualifying pass. Chakti managed to button it back up to return for first round action against the similar car of Daniel Ruggier. Ruggier won the race on the start-line when Chakti recorded a .577 light to be almost four tenths behind his opponent, thus a closer 8.647 on an 8.60 dial-in was taken out by a 9.069 on an 8.80 dial-in.

The “Quicksilver” Suzuki Hayabusa of Leonard Azzopardi top qualified in the Pro Sports Bike field with a 7.754 to be almost a half second ahead of the rest of the bracket in a heads up Chicago Shootout format. It therefore came as no surprise that Azzopardi won all three of his races with 7.613/188.78, 7.631/192.49 and 7.516/188.94 times turning back the Hayabusa’s of Wally Hosta, Matt Gildon and Glenn Northridge respectively. This bike has been run on the street in the past and with speeds approaching 195 mph it is the ultimate street weapon.
