“It was a great run,” Worsham said. “I was kind of wowed myself. The car’s been running better at every individual race. The crew chiefs along with Jim Oberhofer and Connie Kalitta have been working together and making a lot of headway.

“I’m really excited for the guys on this team. For the last six years, they’ve been working really hard to find success and I feel really good about where we’re going. I’m really happy for [crew chiefs] Jon Oberhofer and Nick Boninfante. They’ve stuck with this team through thick and thin, and I’m proud of them.”

Jack Beckman broke the track speed record with a pass of 317.05 in his Valvoline/MTS Charger, as his run of 4.012 puts him in second. Matt Hagan and his Mopar/Rocky Footwear Dodge Charger was third with a 4.049 at 317.05, matching Beckman’s speed just moments after the defending Funny Car world champ set the track record.

Massey set the pace in an entertaining final qualifying session in Top Fuel, racing his Battery Extender dragster to the top spot with a run of 3.775 at 326.79. It was Massey’s first No. 1 of the season, his first at Bristol and seventh of his career.

Saturday the teams faced warmer temperatures and Bristol Dragway refused to yield many good qualifying times during the final two sessions, with many drivers encountering tire-smoking conditions.

TOP FUEL

Torrence ran 3.892/314.39 to defeat Clay Millican’s 4.410/195.59 in the semifinal.

Steve Torrence’s Top Fuel win, which also boosted him into ninth place in the points standing, emphasized the remarkable comeback of his Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. team since crew chief Lee Beard came on board three races ago.

Torrence put together four consistent 3.8-second runs, including a 3.871-second, 320.13 mph 1,000-foot lap to nip Spencer Massey’s 3.894 at 317.19 by about seven feet in the championship round. It was Torrence’s fourth career triumph in six finals.  He had a total of only three round wins in the previous nine 2013 races.
