Alas Australia does not have a plethora of nitro powered front engine dragsters but Dave Armstrong’s car pretty much makes up for that. As can be seen this orange FED certainly looks the business and in qualifying ran a best of 6.43/221.38 however the engine’s rear main sprung a leak and was out for the rest of the day. Similarly fellow FED pilot, Norm Longfield only did one 6.81 second lap and also put the car away.
The awesome looking ’57 Chevrolet Outlaw Nitro Funny Car driven by Rick Gauci was the class of the field. The 413 cubed TFX powered car did three straight as a string laps to totally dominate the class. An off the trailer 5.68/246.93 had the two other funny cars in the class covered by nearly a second and this was backed up mid afternoon with an equally stellar 5.63/256.80 that decimated the previous best ET that he held at 5.697. On that pass his faster speed outdid Shane Olive’s previous best standard of 250.60 mph. As the veil of darkness came over the track there was even better to come as the black Tri-Chevy blasted out an Australian record of a 5.592 at 257.48 mph. Only a handful of cars have run fifties in the world but recent changes to Australian rules were done for engine longevity and the ability to run flames at night.
