MUSGROVE WINS 4.70; BENNETT AND WEST DOUBLE UP

Russell Musgrove saved his best performance of the weekend for the final round Saturday, Oct. 18, and it was just good enough to give him the heads-up 4.70 Pro Mod championship at the 17th annual Fall Civil Wars showdown at Rockingham Dragway.

The Kannapolis resident covered The Rock’s eighth-mile course in 4.721 seconds at 148.58 miles per hour in his 1994 Pontiac Firebird to beat Salisbury’s Jeremy Youker, who was forced to abort after experiencing problems.

Nick Cline, a popular No. 1 qualifier in his 1934 Chevy coupe, was upended in round two by Charlotte’s Bryan Nichols who lost to Musgrove in the semis.
It was the debut appearance for the 4.70 cars that topped a program that also included racing in Open Comp, Pro Tree Doorslammers, Footbrake and 6.0, 7.0 and Combo Index categories.

Howard Brewer and Justen West both were double-winners during the event.  Brewer won the 7.0 Index title on Saturday before driving his venerable 1985 Ford Thunderbird to the Combo Index championship on Sunday.  West won Open Comp on Saturday and Footbrake Sunday.

E.J. Womack was kind of another double winner -- in the same race. Womack double-entered his Chevy S-10 in Saturday’s Pro Tree Door Slammer class and met himself in the final round, taking home both the winner and runner-up monies. Womack collected a total of $2,000 for his double effort.

Other winners included Dale Sanders in Open Comp on Sunday, Frankie Irving and Michael Beard in Footbrake and Eric Hamilton in the 6.0 Index category.
