Lloyd and Carol with their 1961 Ventura posing for a local newspaper article back in the day.

The safety crew got to her and asked, “Sir, are you all right?”

Carol took off her helmet, shook out her long red hair and replied, “I am not a sir. And now that I’ve proved I can drive, I want to race officially.”

Her publicity campaign worked. In 1962, Carol raced and won the Winternationals in Pomona. Lloyd ran a 1962 Tempest as one of the first A/FX cars. The build of that car was covered in Car Craft magazine that year. Lloyd won at the Winternationals in that car.

Later in 1962, Carol and Lloyd took her Pontiac, the Tempest and some of Mickey’s cars to the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis. There, Carol became the first woman to win at the U.S. Nationals—she did it in her S/SA 1961 Pontiac. Lloyd also took first place in the Tempest in the A/FX class. Thus, Lloyd and Carol Cox became the first husband and wife winners at the U.S. Nationals, or any national for that matter.

Steve is a life-long drag racer and can be seen racing and winning in NMCA West events. His daughter, Crista, started in Junior Dragsters and still loves racing. Three generations of drag racers so far, and Crista has a daughter, so a fourth gen is in the making.
