Bowen shocked the troops with a Low ET of the meet 5.793/247.88 to solidify his number-one spot and Jake Sanders tuned up the “Mr. Explosive” Mustang and his dad, Mark, drove it a 5.930/234 to put the team in the third qualifying spot. Sanders was also the last to qualify with a 5-second ET!

Times dropped off quickly after the top three qualifiers and the bump was held by Illinois racer Kevin Lennon who hadn’t raced in a couple of years with a coasting 10.630 effort in the “Shake N Bake” Arrow.

Tony Pedregon brought his Keith Burgan-tuned “TV Tom” car, but had trouble getting the bugs worked out of the new car and did not qualify for the eight-car field. Brother Cruz won the event last year, but didn’t drive a AA/FC this year.

On race day a freak storm dumped more than two inches of rain on an already water-logged track at about 10 a.m., but the Cordova track crew went to work and in a couple of hours once again had the track dried and ready for racing. However, the weather assured that this race would not be decided by who could make the most power but which driver and tuner could adjust the best to a tricky track.
