RUMOR: Tom Compton MIA; Peter Clifford assumes command of NHRA?

During the last 45-60 days DRO editor Jeff Burk has been getting calls from NHRA track owners/operators and team owners regarding the absence of NHRA president Tom Compton from the day-to-day operations of the NHRA. No one talked to has seen Compton in the NHRA Glendora, Calif., offices or at national events; nor have they been able to reach him by phone during this period of time.

Track operators and drag racing businessmen have told Burk that in the last 45-60 days, conversations they usually have with Tom Compton regard contracts and other day-to-day NHRA business either aren't taking place or some other member of Compton's management team such as VP of Sales & National Event Marketing, Glen Cromwell, or Executive VP/General Manager, Peter Clifford, are making those calls.

According to multiple sources very close to the NHRA, the Board of Directors met on Wednesday, June 3, in Glendora and VP Peter Clifford was named as the acting head of the NHRA by the voting members of the board.

There has been no information from the NHRA regarding Mr. Compton’s absence. DRO has contacted the NHRA regarding these rumors for confirmation or denial of the rumor without any reply so far. [6/4/2015]
