Despite the fact that the NHRA also featured nitro-burning Harleys the same weekend at the Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., the IHRA had a full field of eight of the beasts. Eliminations saw all of the top four qualifiers defeat their opponents and advance to the semifinals. In the semi’s both Randal Andras and Jay Turner had no problem winning and advancing to the finals.

The riders in the finals were the class of the field. Andras from Amelia, La., lined up against perennial Nitro-Harley star Jay Turner. Both teams saved their best efforts for the final round. Turner ran Low ET of the meet with a 6.383/221.02 efforts to Andras’s dead game 6.402/228.04 effort, which was good for Top Speed of the meet.
