Saturday Qualifying

DRO competitors are used to qualifying and racing in the cool of the evening, but Super Chevy events traditionally are run during the afternoon and the hot and humid weather took its toll on the nitro racers.

Jimmy Young, driving the lone TF dragster competing with the DRO series after the 2015 rule change allowing Heritage-legal N/TF and AA/FA to compete with the N/FC, qualified well with a 6.031/217.74. Unfortunately the East Coast team had a brand new rod break in half, destroying the engine and keeping them from racing on Sunday.

John "Bodie" Smith driving for Henry Gutierrez qualified on his first lap with a 5.916 but then on the second lap he experienced parts failure that would talk multiple trips to local machine shops for help and a repair job that took them most of the night and the next day to fix.

Romine was the number-one qualifier with a 5.891/241 effort on his first qualifying lap, which ended up being his best lap of the event.
