Certainly the first round of qualifying in Pro Alcohol on Friday afternoon was shaken up when Russell Mills put down a 5.521 in his unique Richard Botica-built front engine dragster. The car looks like a hybrid between an altered and funny car but it did the trick. Alas, engine damage from that pass was to rule him out for the rest of the race.

While no one was surprised to see Mark Belleri’s AC Delco Holden Monaro (far lane) in the final, it was a surprise to see Jeffery Wilson’s Corvette. Wilson had come into the final frame having run his first 5-second pass in the semis -- a 5.957 -- whereas Belleri had lane choice with a 5.885. On the green Belleri was long gone with a .053 to .108 lead and a winning 5.872 while Wilson’s BAE engine was off song ending up with a second best 6.324.
