THE LOADED QUESTION - er

In a move designed to approximate the moves of NFLer Barry Sanders journalistically, the LQ has come up with some identifiable (we hope) alcohol cars. A couple are hard questions, but you guys have gotten better over the last few quizzes, so here' ya go.

How to play? You must know by now. We put up a pic, provide a few wordy clues, and then you guys start scratching your craniums. Don't scratch too hard as there is nothing uglier than the human brain, esepecially if its inside the skull of John Ashcroft.

Last Call for Alcohol

This New Jerseyite won back-to-back NHRA Division 1 Pro Comp titles in 1975 and 1976. He also drove nitro Funny Cars. His name is??? (Photo by Vincent J. Mele)

At a 1980s Indy Division 3 Winston points meet, the late great Al DaPozzo's "Evil Spirit" is seen beating the 1982 Winston Alcohol Dragster champion and, of course, this winner of the inaugural NHRA SPORTSnationals, is ??? (Photo by Richard Brady)

One of the most mechanically gifted Pro Comp/Alcohol Dragster racers is this Arizona competitor. Outside of the tires, the wiring, the blower case, and a a few other minor details, he manufactured the entire car you see before you.

The black front-motored dragster seen losing to chassis builder Hal Canode at Beech Bend Int'l Raceway in Ky., is driven by a former collegiate swimming champ and a reasonably well-known Top Fuel driver. Hint: He drove a Top Fuel dragster for veteran nitro wrench Larry Frazierm in 1976, and his name is? (Photo by Jerry Ream)

The Beaty & Morton Corvette is seen running at an NHRA Northwest Nationals race at Seattle Int'l Raceway. The driver of this car used to drive one called "the Velvet Hammer" Alcohol Funny Car. Part of his name is on the side of the car. You supply the first.

The winner of our quiz from last issue is Saen Sow Ploenchit of Thailand, who got all five answers and claims to be drag racing's most knowledgable fan. You guys, no one got any of these. Shirley vs. Jody Smart (1981), wheelstanding Larry Bucher and "the Shadow", coming toward the camera Dwight Salibury in the "Salisbury's Stake" entry, the smoker "Wild Bill" Alexander in the Quincy-Herbert-Brissette dragster, and finally, the 3-wheeler? Kenny Ellis at San Fernando.
