Without question, the original Arizona ‘super stars of the drags’ were three members of the Lords Car Club from Tucson. They were Lyle Fischer, Don Maynard, and Red Greth.  Prior to the trio’s world recognized Modified Roadster; they ran several flat head Ford powered rails on nitro fuel. The photo above from Jim Kelly captures all three with the best appearing of the cars, at their Davis-Monthan AFB track.

 

Bakersfield, Ca. ‘Ca. Hot Rod Reunion, 2010: A replica of Tucson, Arizona’s famous Speed Sport Roadster on display in the crowded pit area. It looks like a set of driver Lyle Fisher’s spoke wheels are on the front.

This sign from 1955 tells a Tucson resident from that era quite a lot. It is the Tucson Timing Association, and everyone was to use the Alvernon Ave. entrance to Davis-Monthan AFB.
