As you can see, the USAC promoters did put in temporary guard rails alongside the track which was in the basement parking area of the huge facility. Above, a Falcon and ’56 Oldsmobile near the finish line of the 400-foot course.

A flagman was required in the early ‘60s as seen in this starting line photo of a race between two Chevrolets. From being there, I can attest that the haze in this photo was created by the exhaust from so many cars running at all times.

Things looked like they were well thought out, but there were problems. The exit from the huge building required all racers to use one of two large doors into an additional outdoor parking lot. Between these doors were cement columns which supported the large building.

This primo B/A 32 Ford three window got out of shape and collided with the column, tearing up the right side of their coupe. Fortunately, the driver was not injured, but still…

There were reports, but we did not see it, of the use of Coca-Cola syrup on the starting line which was highly polished concrete.
