With a Heavy Heart

My November column had intended to be about a mid-west racer and in the New Year it will be. However today I suffered a catastrophic loss which supersedes all my other projects. My wife Sherry, soulmate for more than 60 years, was taken from this world, Saturday, Oct. 25. Her death came suddenly like so many do, but at least her suffering was short lived and she certainly deserved that.

Who was my wife and how did she fit into drag racing? Please allow me to explain.

Sherry and I were 'old school' childhood sweethearts from the small town of Willcox, Arizona. Both graduated from Willcox High School, two years apart and we both attended Arizona State University at Tempe, Arizona.

Carlsbad Raceway 1973:
Posing for a photo during a break in the Carlsbad Pro Stock program is my family decked out in matching uniforms which Sherry had made. The 'little bit' is our daughter Jennifer, the boy our oldest son, Guy, and mom Sherry. I always considered I had my own 'Jungle Pam'! No memory of who shot this photo.
