GOIN' TO KANSAS CITY

Way back in 1959, this writer spent two week-ends at the Kansas City Drag Strip racing my 1958 Pontiac Chieftain.

The first time, I won A/S class after driving the car from Kahoka, Mo. By late fall, the ‘old’ ’58 had been converted to C/GAS and was ‘flat towed the 231 miles to the track.

I always enjoyed going to KC for races in those early days, but it was further than Cordova, Des Moines, or Alton.

An interesting point learned during my fall appearance at a regional ‘gasser’ event, was meeting the KC ‘scale master’ Jim Tice. Tice would go on to become the President and COO of the fledgling American Hot Rod Association.

Kansas City drags, the early days: Bob Sullivan spent twenty five years drag racing, mostly from the KC area. His well-known line of race cars featured his hallmark, PANDEMONIUM!  The fourth such car, probably constructed by KC ace Rod Stuckey, is shown here during Top Fuel action.
