Marana Air Park just north of what was then a small Arizona town of the same name, operated drag races for some time.

As time slid by, Tucson Dragway, operated by genial Bob Huff, out on Houghton Road North gave way to the newer Tucson Dragway also near Houghton Road only south of I-10 on the Pima County Fairgrounds. The new track was named Southwestern Int. Dragway and offered several large events under the IHRA sanction.

A changing of the guard occurred late in 2015, when Jim Hughes of Hughes Transmission Company bought an interest in the track. Jim quickly returned the sanction to NHRA and a 2016 schedule was hurriedly done for the racers’ benefit.

For 2017, both Hughes and track operations manager, Matt DeYoung, are offering racers a busy and well-founded schedule of events.
