Check Out That Chassis

Jim

I know all the new rules (sfi) chassis-related are supposed to make the cars safer, but they also up the price of racing a lot.

I have a G body Malibu that has an old style 2x3 grafted onto the stock frame right in front of the middle of the doors and a 12 point MS cage. Would it be possible to redo the bottom 2x3 part in MS and graft basically a chromoly cage similar to what you would see on a prostocker onto the factory frame and have it meet SFI good to 7.50?

Thanks,

John

John,

Thanks for reading our column and submitting a question. You can definitely meet SFI 7.50 spec by grafting a chromoly cage onto your factory frame. Depending on your configuration, you'll want to refer to SFI Spec 25.4 or 25.5 which are listed below.

Good luck!

Jim

25.4 Full Bodied Car Tube Chassis – 7.50 to 8.49 Seconds; 3,600 lbs. Maximum
25.5 Full Bodied Car Stock or Modified/OEM Floorpan and Firewall with OEM Frame or Uni-Body Construction – 7.50 to 8.49 Seconds; 3,600 lbs. Maximum
