• A step back for fuel cars seems like it would be simple. First year, reduce fuel flow by restricting the fuel pumps (less fuel, less horsepower and parts carnage). Reduce the blower inlet size and overdrive the first year then restrict blower size to reduce need for $30K billet blowers. One more year for the goofy looking funny car bodies, then they have to look like a car. Not nostalgia car bodies, new Camaros, Dodges, Toyotas, Jeeps -- who cares as long as they resemble a real body. Yes, they will need wings and some modifications, but what we have now is ridiculous as far as “fan appeal.”

  • What will happen in the next year or two? If nothing changes except for little tweaks here and there I think you will see fewer and fewer pro teams because sponsors have to realize the stands are pretty much empty, there is no draw for the younger people when tickets are about $50-$75 a day to watch 14 cars ”qualify” for a 16-car show. (I am still amazed the announcers don’t fall asleep trying to explain that to spectators).

  • Move qualifying to Saturday. Two shots at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Why have spectators there all day? Sunday would be the final three rounds of sportsman and pros. Make it a two-day event with a two-day ticket of $50.00 and kids are free. If that admission price won’t cover the pro purses, lower the purse, which means lower the cost to compete with budget-oriented rules.

  • When you have fewer and fewer spectators and fewer and fewer pro teams you’d BETTER DO SOMETHING (Besides give your Board of Directors a raise).

On a different note -- I want to congratulate NHRA for letting the Stock and Super Stock racers “take off the gloves” with their new idea for the U.S. Nationals. GO AS FAST AS YOU CAN WITHOUT THE PENALTY of having the engine/car combination re-factored by the NHRA. Let’s see just HOW FAST these new super cars are!

I used to go to Indy to watch the Hemi Shootout, which was awesome but remember, I am an old guy and remember the Hemi cars. Young people should be invited the Wed-Thurs-Fri qualifying for Stock and Super Stock with a special ticket or special price. Maybe $34.99 for a two-day pass but you have to be under 35 years old. Something to get them in so they can see REAL CARS on the rear bumpers and in my estimation running in the low 8-second range with stock bodies and electric widows. That will get young people interested.

Watching the Greek and Kalitta is cool for us old guys but meaningless for the younger generation. Give them what they see every day on the city street, highways and car dealerships: Modern Muscle.
