Help!
The weather utterly sucked for four of the five days at the NHRA U.S.
Nationals. Muggy, hot, miserable conditions that produced one mediocre
time after another. I mean, let's face the ugly facts of it: God has
a picture of Benny Parsons on his dashboard, not our old pal Dave McClelland.
How bad was the weather? In the first qualifying session of Top Fuel
on Sunday at noon, only Gary Scelzi (4.699) could run a 4.6-second effort
and only five drivers could run 4.7s. The rest were 4.80s or worse.
Wrrretttcchh! Well then, how about Saturday at the same bat channel,
the same bat station? Just one 4.6, a little better 4.66 by World Champ
Tony Schumacher; after him just three 4.7s with most of the remaining
14 runs in el' toiletto. Am I whining a little too much here? MAYBE.
However, the first 4.6-second run was a 4.69 by Cory McClenathan in
1994. And Funny car was not a helluva lot better, a sprinkling of fours
with 5.0s, 5.1s as common as humidity. Curses, performance fans, foiled
again.
The Jegster Almost in the Dumpster.
Indy Pro Stock winner Jeg Coughlin Jr., who won six of the first seven
NHRA Pro Stock races this year, nearly caused massive coronaries in
the Jeg's Mail Order pits prior to Monday. He had a horrible time of
it in qualifying and just barely hung on to get into the field with
a No. 16 qualifying effort of 7.020. The last time the "Jegster" failed
to qualify was last April when his DNQ at the NHRA Atlanta was the last
of three such non-qualifiers in a row. That seems impossible given how
good he has been in 2000. By the way, as strange as it seems this was
Jeg Jr.'s first Indy win of any type.
Standing Pat
Most know now that Shirley Muldowney's spectacular, if not winning effort,
was backed by goosehead.com, which is owned by 15-year-old Ashley Power.
One of the partners in the Goosehead deal is veteran wrench, the now-retired
Pat Galvin, who used to work on the Top Fuelers of Muldowney and Connie
Kalitta, and the Funny Cars of Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen Funny Cars,
to name just a few.
A Short History of the U.S. Army
Quick! How long has it been since the Army has been involved in drag
racing at the level they are now with Winston Top Fuel champ Tony Schumacher
(above)? Twenty years ago (as in 1980) Don Prudhomme enjoyed his final
with the Army emblazoned on his Plymouth Horizon Funny Car. And how
about this support vehicle - it's a real hum-dinger!
Yipes, Stripes
The
most eye-catching car at the U.S. Nationals was not one that was racing.
Instead, displayed near the Pro staging lanes was the blue with white
pin stripes New York Yankees baseball team Top Fueler of the Gwynn Family
and George Steinbrenner. Car's supposed to debut at the O'Reilly Fallnationals
at the Texas Motorplex.
