TOO MUCH AERO?

One of Agent 1320's operatives attended a much-heralded introduction at Pomona Raceway on February 6. Three-time Top Fuel Pilot Gary Scelzi took the wraps off of the new Alan Johnson Celica-bodied funny car, supported by Toyota Racing Development. The car's primary sponsorship is from White Cap, a professional contractor's supply house.

Later that afternoon, the swoopy coupe headed over to NHRA's Tech Inspection line for the 2002 Winternationals. Under the watchful eye of Ray Alley, NHRA's Director of Top Fuel and Funny Car Operations, it seems there may be a few items up for debate about the new aerodynamic body. A formed aluminum header "splash panel" diverter and the width of the rear spoiler may be at issue.

Mr. Alley's rules allow for a 54-inch spoiler width and the new body's rear spoiler approaches 55 1/2 inches. The extension of that spoiler's downward length toward the bumper may also be an issue. The operative then witnessed a spirited discussion between Alley and Johnson on possible modifications. The tin snips will be snipping before the sleek, Swift-built body gets its final approval from the Safety Safari.
