ODDY TO BUILD A HEMI FOR PRO MOD?

Agent 1320 hears that team owner and engine builder Jim Oddy is seriously considering building a billet-headed Hemi to replace the wedge that currently powers his Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pro Modified 'Vette. Oddy reportedly is thinking of ordering engine components from both Brad Anderson and Bob Newberry over the winter and putting both on his dyno to find out which has the most power. If Oddy switches to the billet-headed hemi powerplant, the Agent thinks that Pro Mod will take a giant step toward becoming a clone of the Alky Funny Car class. Interesting to note here is that when IHRA first allowed the billet heads and billet-headed hemis, they had to run 25-percent overdrive but IHRA tech officials soon allowed 29-percent over and hemis started becoming the engine of choice in the blown Pro Mod ranks. Through their exploits on Midwest and East Coast drag strips, the Ramchargers were pivotal in building interest in the 426-cid Plymouths and Dodges that proved so popular with performance-minded drivers. If any one group epitomized the Stock, A/Factory Experimental period of the 1960s and very early 1970s, it was this one.

He was manager of Dodge Motor Sports for Chrysler, and was a member of the National Hot Rod Association Hall of Fame, the National Street Rod Association Hall of Fame, American Motorcyclist Association, the Honda Sport Touring Association, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. [9-05-2002]
