Jay,

I have a very consistent combination that just runs out of steam about 1100 ft. mark. It’s a 2600 lb. Vega 385 Chevy -13.5 .630 roller 262/271 at .050 106 intake c/l w/ ported dart sportsmans flowing 268 cfm at .600 alcohol injection 176 glide 5200 stall spragless 4.56 dana 60 ladder bar and 32' tire. Its best is 9.89 at 136 (6000 stall and 31"tires) timing does not effect 36-42.

The egt has been checked with different meters probes and locations. It likes 980 to 1050 and 1100 will slow it down.

I want to run super street next year and try to keep my mph up. The car launches now hard on the bars and would hit the bumper without them with the old 6000 stall 31' setup. I tightened the converter and went up on the tire to keep it sane, but lost e.t. Mph now 10.01 at 134.

Are the heads too small for this setup? It seems to lie down and fuel and timing won’t change it. Does 300 cfm at .600 lift get me to 600 hp? The best std. 23 deg. head I found is a afr 210 full cnc. Is this going to work and what converter will match up best?

Thanks,

Hi and thanks for writing,

The one bit of info. I wish you would have included is what type of fuel pump you use and what pressure you see at the finish. Assuming you have that base covered and are not running out of fuel, my first impulse is to suggest something I have been beating people up over for years. VALVE SPRINGS!!!!

One of the clues to this is that you say changing timing and fuel setups makes no difference. Does the engine act like it has some kind of a governor? You did not say what rpm's you see at the 1100 ft. mark to the finish but this sounds like a familiar problem. There can be many things capable of giving you this problem, but I would suspect valve springs first because I have noticed through the years that the poor overworked valve springs are often neglected until something breaks.

Generally speaking, using the cam specs you provided I would like to see at least 250 lbs. of seat pressure and 550 lbs. open at .600" lift. If I'm right and this is your problem, I'll guess you have 150-170 lbs. seat and 400 open, which will definitely cause this problem. Hope this helps. Please let me know what you find out.
