Jay,

I have purchased a '69 Camaro; The block # 3970010 the heads are #8898920 gm. My compression test 180 and dyno at rear wheels 187 w/1 psi on fuel at the end of dyno test. I am planning on installing a holly blue because of fuel pressure loss. The carb is a 750 d.p. I purchased this car to bracket race and want to run in the 12's on high octane gas. I have a 10 bolt w/ 373 and non posi. Transmission is 350 w/a good kit. Tranny hits hard in all gears. The cam is a solid lift w/eldabrock performer, msd 6al and distributor. The car has hooker headers and flow master exhaust 2"or more. This is how I purchased the car.

My questions are to use this block not knowing if it is a 2,4 bolt main, assuming 10.5 compression flat tops w/ 40 bore, the heads have screw in studs and guide plates but the springs look stock. Should I take the heads completely off and change out with trick flow and change cam to higher lift and go roller? Should I go to a victor jr. single plain intake? Should I change out to 12 bolt w 411 and install 3500 stall to work w/cam? Completely go through motor and change out rods and pistons. The motor seems to run really strong but not strong enough. Cost wise I would like to know your opinion. Max power 183.3 @4250 Max torque 257.8@3000. Dyno test on motor in this car. H.P. @50 mph 14:10 cyl/disp 8/5.7.

Ronnie,

If money isn't much of an obstacle then YES!! to all of your parts list wishes! But, if you're like most of us and need to do the important things first I will see what I can do. You say you bought this for a Bracket car so I am going to assume there will be no street driving. If you do then fine but I'm talking racecar here.

First, the block should be a 4 bolt as evidenced by the 010 numbers at the end of the part number. If you can afford it then by all means buy better aftermarket heads. Not saying you can't run 12's with these heads but aftermarkets' will be better. Definitely get a fuel pump, ditch the Performer and get a Performer RPM or Air Gap, buy a Spool or Positraction, dump the exhaust for drag racing or at least run 3 in. pipes.

Depending on your tire size you will probably want a deeper gear such as 4.56. Run as tall and wide of a slick as you can fit under the car and gear accordingly. As for valvesprings, 150 seat and 300 open is a start. Lastly, buy a GOOD torque converter from a reputable company. Don't use a "Vega" converter or any other "old timer tricks". Hope for the best, hope this helps.
