MAUNEY MAKES MOVE OFFICIAL
Tommy Mauney has confirmed what Agent N2O revealed earlier: that despite swearing to anyone who would listen that he would never make the switch to supercharged powerplants, he has indeed made the move, buying a couple of motors from Joey Moore. Moore’s car was the first slammer to make a sub-four-second eighth mile lap. The engines are alleged to have the Scotty Cannon tune-up and everything that goes with it. Mauney has said in an interview in Competition Plus magazine that he didn’t get Scotty’s tune-up with the deal and wouldn’t want it. Of course, he also said he would never have a supercharged engine. The Agent wonders how Mauney’s landlord, shop neighbor, and master nitrous engine builder, Gene Fulton, feels about all of this.

MORE HORSEPOWER FOR SOME NITROUS RACERS
The Agent was told by a good source that those racers who use Shannon Jenkins powerplants were told not to worry. Evidently Jenkins has been doing some serious research and development work and found some horsepower gains. Supposedly the only racers who will share this gain are Shannon and the racers / owners who lease engines from the “Iceman.” When the teams get to Canada it sure will be interesting to see who goes fast.

NITROUS RACERS TURNING TO TRICK IGNITIONS
Most of the major ignition companies have developed ignition systems that will allow tuners to adjust individual cylinder timing. According to the Agent’s tech advisors, this is a major factor in helping a nitrous motor to not detonate itself to death while making more horsepower. Harold Martin has been using this ignition for some time, but the Agent hears that many of the “hitters” are finding more power using a programmable ignition system.

TOMMY GREY TRIES ANOTHER WAY
While some nitrous racers are experimenting with programmable ignitions, the Agent hears that Tommy Grey’s “Undertaker” Vette is using an MSD 44 amp magneto system to provide spark. Currently, the most powerful spark in the industry comes from the MSD 44. While no numbers have been reported, Grey continues to run low 6.40’s with the Vette.
