Ed. Note:  Wady Hamam or Pro Mod Wad as he is known in the sport as drag racing's main nitrous Guru. He has been involved in nitrous oxide injection almost from its inception especially with the Pro Mod division.. He is originally from the Buffalo, New York area and has been involved in all types of racing from flat track motorcycles to fuel dragsters. In his wasted youth he even raced a fuel funny car powered by a blown and injected small block Ford! He and his brother campaigned a front motored Top Fuel dragster and lost a race against Don Garlits at the now closed Niagara Falls Dragway. His advice about nitrous problems is highly sought after but he is hard to get to. He has agreed to answer one question every couple of weeks for Drag Racing Online readers. Email your questions to: promodwad@racingnetsource.com, and he will answer the question he finds most intriguing.

Pro Mod Wad,

Most racers use gas injected with their nitrous, but does anybody run a gas motor and inject alcohol with the nitrous? How would the tuning differ from a gas and gas combo?

RC Carlson

RC,

Over the years I have worked with several racers that have run a race gas engine and alky/nitrous combination. The results are ALWAYS frustrating! It seems that the slightest weather condition change affects the alky/nitrous tune up dramatically and it's very difficult to get consistent runs with this combo.

The better way is to run the engine on alky and run the nitrous with race gas as very good results come from this combo. Much power is available from an alky engine and it is easily tuned on the nitrous side with race gas.

In the last couple of years some racers with multi-staged systems have had better luck with ethanol alcohol in one of the stages as the ethanol has characteristics of both race gas and alky. It seems to make good power without excessive heat and follows more closely to a race gas tuning jetting map. But they only seem to use it in one of the stages--no more than that.

I wish I could give you more info on this type of fuel, but if you do some research you may find the info you need.
