FIRST ALL FOUR-SECOND FIELD IN FUNNY CAR
The
first all four-second 16 car field in NHRA Fuel Funny car history came
at Phoenix. It wasn't an event where the last car just managed to run
a four-second lap to set the standard; the fuel coupes blew through
the barrier like Sherman's march to the sea. Dean Skuza (above) was
on the pole with a 4.80 lap- the quickest ever for floppers burning
a 90% nitro fuel mixture. The bump was a stellar 4.961 by Gary Densham.
Three other cars were on the DNQ list despite laps in the 4.90's at
over 300-mph: Johnny Grey, Phil Burkhart, and fuel flopper rookie driver
Tony Bartone. (below).
