RACERS, START YOUR ENGINES
Words and photos by Jeff Burk
The annual pre-season test and tune session at Charlie Allen's Firebird
International Raceway is, for drag racing's hard core, the first real
sign that their long winter suffering through no nitro fumes, tire smoke
or teeth-rattling noise is at last over.
For both the old and new teams and drivers it is finally time to put-up
or shut-up and find out if all the trick new stuff they took a second
mortgage out on the family DeSoto to buy was worth the money. All right,
gang, let's go to the notes.
FUNNY CAR
Like a wide receiver on a crossing pattern hearing the footsteps of
a 230-lb 'backer, Whit Bazemore and tuner Lee Beard had John Force and
Austin Coil hearing footsteps at the end of the 2001 season. This year
Scotty "Too-Hottie" Cannon (above) and tuner Mike Neff have joined up
with Bazemore and Beard and, if the pre-season testing is any indication,
things could be very interesting for Team Force this year.
Co-crew chiefs Beard and Neff sent Bazemore (above) to a best of 4.789/
315.19 and Scotty to a 4.802, with Cannon getting the top speed at 316.75.
