The 2001 NHRA Winternationals

BACA STUNS 'EM WITH UNBLOWN 5.220
David Baca, a semifinalist in Alcohol Dragster, was the winner of the "unofficial" best pass of the meet honors. All he did was run a quickest-for-the-class 5.220 in the second round of competition. To give you an idea of how impressive an achievement this was, the NHRA record for the A/Fuel Dragster class is Mark Woods' 5.303 turned at the 1999 Winston Finals.

Pomona over the years has been a hot spot for the unblown nitro burners. Just a few relatively recent highlights would include Ed Vickroy's 5.77/253.16 at the '92 Winston Finals and Keith Stark's sizzling 270.27 a few years later at the same race. With governors on the blown nitro cars and all the wraps off the unblown, it would be hard to register a more impressive pass than the first four for this breed. Also, for those into brainteasers: you know that Baca used to run around with Winston Top Fuel champ Gary Scelzi, and we all know who Gary's crew chief is. (CM)
