NITROUS CONTROLLERS
If you're a giggle gas kind of racer there
is another route you can take in your quest
for more traction. By progressively adding nitrous
rather than simply introducing a huge blast
of nitrous all at one time can be done through
a progressive nitrous controller.
Nitrous
Oxide Systems, better known as simply NOS, has
systems that can be programmed to control the
amount of nitrous that is injected as well the
time that it takes to ramp the flow to 100 percent.
For instance, you could set the controller to
allow only 40 percent of the nitrous to flow
for the first two seconds of a pass, then increase
it to full nitrous within the next second. With
this programmed, the extra nitrous power won't
be kicking in completely until the tires are
churning and hooking up.
The
Programmable Nitrous Controller from NOS lets
you control the flow of nitrous so the additional
power won't overwhelm the tires at the launch.
Once the car is planted and rolling you can
program the time it takes to ramp the nitrous
up to 100 percent.
TIRE SPIN
Toasting the hides
with too much power is a sweet thing to
most of us weekend warriors. That is, until
you need to get a harness on that power
to be competitive at the drag strip. Classes
that require a DOT-approved tire or small
tread width challenge racers to devise ways
to control the engine's power and altering
ignition timing seems to be the tuning tool
of choice. (Photo by Michael Ray) |
Tuning the timing
for the holeshot can loosely be compared
to slipping a clutch (at least during the
holeshot). The timing needs to be retarded
to soften the power just enough to get the
tires to hook. Too much retard will be detrimental
to the e.t., while not enough retard could
lead to a cloud of tire smoke. Bruce Lagory
seems to be able to walk this fine line
as his Barracuda yanks the skinnies with
a set of DOT-approved 10.5-inch tread! (Photo

BARRY
GRANT
A timer, such as this now obsolete Barry Grant
Mid Track Timer, is useful to activate and deactivate
different rates of timing retard at precise
moments throughout a run.
DEDENBEAR
Dedenbear Products is a familiar name in the
bracket and index racing with a variety of throttle
stops and controllers. These components, such
as their TSC2A can be used to activate and deactivate
a retard at an adjustable time.
