Mike,
I would like your opinion on our converter set up. We have a 215-inch
RED with a port injected small block Chevy 355 c.i. It has AFR 220 heads
out of the box with no special porting. The car with driver is 1550
lbs. The tranny is a shorty glide with a 176 gear set. The converter
is a Richard Dougherty bolt together. It stalls at 6,100.
We have never been able to get this car to 60-foot where we think it
should. The best 60-foot time is a 1.21. We think it should be in the
teens.
Do you think we could be losing it in the converter? It goes through
the lights at 8,100 rpm.

Greg,
Launch and 60-foot times are directly related to horsepower or torque
versus the load or weight we are trying to move. A lot of different
points can make a difference: cam, tire size, gear ratios, and the rotating
weight of the engine and drive train assembly. The converter definitely
has to be right for power plus weight combo.
We really need more information to zero in on your problem. The
car may not have enough gear or the converter may be too tight for the
cam combo. We need an outline of car and engine.
Let us know and we can get more specific.
