Mike,

I'd like to give you the basics of my combo and ask for your opinion for a 2.10 low gear set for TH-400.

I have a '78 Camaro, narrowed frame and Dana 60 with 4.56 gears, 454 0.30, 11.5 (roughly) comp, 593/240 hydraulic cam, mildly ported oval port heads, 850 Holley/Team G intake. The car's weight is close to 3000 lbs and I have a 9 or 10-inch converter to pick to be in the 4500 rpm range.

The question I have for you, is this 2.48 going to be too violent for me or do I need to look into a 2.10 or so low gear to not blow the tires loose a few feet away from the starting line? I haven't seen too many 'glide combinations live for very long (locally) with similar set-ups. Traction can be marginal because (the staff) is not allowed to "really" fix up our track because of national events and only use their stuff, so synthetic oils come up quickly, or so we're told.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Kenny,

I would try the 400 with the 4500 stall converter that you have, to see how it performs at the track. If it is violent, you can go to a lesser gear in the rear end or put the 2.10 gear set in the transmission. That should calm it down.

The low gear sets for the 400's are pricey and must be serviced often to prevent gear wear. The 400 transmission has lost of spinning weight that you would get rid of by changing to the powerglide.

If we were starting from scratch, I would set it up with one of our powerglides, a looser stall torque converter and more rear end gear.
